Where Do The Most Searched Keywords Go

The object of keyword research is to find not only the most searched keywords but more importantly the most profitable ones. Any search on Google is logged and the number of times a particular phrase is entered into the search form can be found very easily. Most importantly we can get this information free,  directly  from the horses mouth, that is, Google.

The big G gives us the tool to find the most popular keywords and phrases that people enter into the search bar. This is called the Google External Keyword Tool and you can find it here.  This is a free tool that anyone can access. It is primaril designed and set up for online marketers who wish to us the Google Adwords programme but as I say anyone can use it.

If you are just starting out the free tool is a good place to start, it will give you an indication of the number of times a keyword or phrase is used and with a bit of fiddling around you can find out the competition you will face . The competition is an important factor if you wish to see your website on page one. Effectively there is only one page, although Google and other search engines will return many, many pages of results the majority of people will only look at the first page and click through to one of the websites shown.

In this case I entered ‘Golf’ as the core term and Google returned the above list. As you can see there are a lot of search terms in there but as it stands they do not do us any good. For a start they are all jumbled up in no particular order and we also have no idea as to how many competing pages are already in the Google index. More work is required.

As I said at the outset we need the most searched keywords but we also need the most profitable ones. If we attempted to get a page indexed on the first page of Google we really have no chance and any efforts would be wasted. This is where keyword research gets interesting.
