Most Searched Keywords 3

In the previous posts we have looked at Googles free keyword tool  and how that can help us to find the most searched keywords. We now have to start refining the search.

To find profitable keywords we need to know how many people are using the search term and how much competition we will face to get ranked for that term.

There is much discussion as to how you can actually measure the competition but almost everybody agrees on a few techniques that will give you an idea.

The ‘Exact Match

Page Rank

Links.

The ‘exact match’ refers to a method of searching a particular keyword. Lets take “Cleveland Golf” . If we type this term (without the quotes) into Google we will get a list of about 2.3 million pages however this is slightly misleading in that Google returns every page that uses the term or even part of it, and even some pages that have only a relationship to it.

If we type “Cleveland Golf” with the quotes Google will only give us pages that have the exact  term Cleveland Golf  on them. The results now are 1/2 a million. We now know that there are half a million pages out there that are concerned specifically with “Cleveland Golf”

We can take this slightly further and find out how many of those pages are actually targeting the keyword. Type:

allintitle: “Cleveland Golf”

into Google and we now get about 28000 pages, see the drop from 2.3 million? This is only a rough measure but it can give some idea as to the strength of your competition.

Page Rank is a measure of importance that Google gives to pages that it has indexed, going from nought through to ten, ten being the most important.. This measure is worth taking note of as an indication of how much the search engines like a page. It is not a be all and end all figure though, there are many web pages making money that have no page rank and likewise many that have a high rank and make no money at all.

Links are important or at least seem to be. Links are seen to be votes for your site by the search engines and there is an awful lot of emphasis put on the number of links that a web page has by affiliate marketers and everybody that wants to make money online. However, there is more to it than that. It is not the number of links that makes the biggest difference but the quality, links are not all equal and I will explain the difference in a seperate post.

As I hope you are beginning to see there is more to making money online than just finding the most searched keywords. Time for bed now, hopefully I will see you in the morning for more info on keyword research.
